As we make our way back from Busan after the first World of Coffee in Asia, we have a few reflections on premiumisation in coffee. If you are wondering where some of the best coffees in the world can be found - it is in South East Asia. Just look at who is buying the top auction lots from Best of Panama, Cup of Excellence and competition grade lots. If you are wondering where the some of the most dedicated and high level coffee professionals are, then look at the success of South East Asia on the world stage in competitions. If you want to know which region has either invested most in education certifications in the last 10 years and or is showing the most growth in education certifications, it is Asia. So, we think there is pretty strong evidence that premiumisation is a strong trend and one to watch if you want to know where some of the coffee market is shifting towards in other parts of the globe as they follow this trend here. However, premiumisation comes with a promise. The customer experience in terms of service excellence, environment and products all needs to be at a high level. Congratulations to the 2024 UK Youth Academy team. Every year we make the selection process a little more challenging, and every year we are super impressed by the calibre of the applications. It makes it so difficult to find a team of 6. Each year the Youth Academy program, sponsored by the @simonelligroup and supported by their local partners put six high potential young coffee professionals through a scholarship. They are certified across all SCA coffee skills modules at the foundation level and to professional level in barista. They are mentored and given opportunities to expand their network in the industry. All this leads to progression in their careers - promotions, new roles, and being able to inspire others. We're excited to announce a series of 3 webinars on roasting by Mark Al-Shemmeri Many of you will already be familiar with Mark, but for those who aren't, you should be, if research lead roasting science is of interest to you. Mark is presenting 3 webinars on different topics in roasting,starting May 15. The first topic is: the physicochemical changes during roasting via different time-temperature profiles You can register via the Events section of the coffee knowledge hub. Marks Bio: Mark Al-Shemmeri has recently finished an Engineering Doctorate (EngD) in the School of Chemical Engineering and the University of Birmingham (UK), wherein his research, entitled 'A Data Driven Approach to Process and Product Simulations of Coffee Roasting', developed fundamental knowledge of coffee roasting, as well as detailed simulations of heat and mass transfer and resulting physicochemical transformation during roasting. We're still processing everything that happened in Chicago at the this year's SCA Expo. Luckily, much of the content we want to revisit has been recorded and will be posted on the coffee knowledge hub soon. Expo has expanded with new features enhancing your chance to engage and learn. The Green coffee summit and retail lounge added a new dimension to the show. The biggest lesson learned from conversations and observations is that education needs to lead to opportunity.
